The Bouncy Castle bus

We used to tour around in a van owned by one of the band’s fathers friend. A used car salesman he’d taken to renting out Inflatables at the weekends. The Bouncy Castle bus was a sight to behold. A classic LDV minibus with brightly vinyled signage across the rusted white bodywork. When the police pulled us over late one night after a show in Carlisle, they took one look at the gurning drunken musicians in the back, another at my pissed off face as driver and sent us off into the sunrise laughing as they clicked their heels back to the squad car.

It’s fifteen minutes to Doors and the audience are queuing outside as we inch our equipment past them on the busy street. It’s a good thing I was prepared and brought a show file for the in-house mixing desk. Nope. Instead, the venue’s installed a prototype model of a brand-new console I’ve never seen before.

An almost incomprehensible amount of preparation and work go into stadium and arena shows. Tour managers, technicians and road crews spend countless hours, weeks and months ensuring that everything runs smoothly when the tour finally sets off, and it’s the local crews job to make sure everything goes as smoothly as it can do during these builds, show calls and take downs.
